Sidewalk and Driveway Power Washing

Driveways and sidewalks made of concrete or other material are not immune to the forming of mold and mildew and will have often collected oil, grease and other stains that mar their looks. They then lose their pristine appearance and start getting black or even green with the mildew and mold. One way of getting rid of all these stains and other dirt is to subject your driveways and sidewalks to pressure cleaning.

Choose the right season for cleaning your sidewalks and driveways. Spring is the right one, as then there will be good weather and enough of the sun to dry your cleaned surfaces quickly. You can bring in professional companies to do this job or hire out pressure washers and do the job yourself. Read up on the instructions of your pressure washer and follow them carefully, as the high pressures of these machines can damage your surfaces if not used properly. Make sure that you also wear appropriate protective gear like gloves, goggles and rubber boots.

It can always help to first clean up the surfaces that need cleaning and remove all the dirt and debris on them with a broom. If your driveways or sidewalks are too close to your home, you may need to provide some protection to walls and doors, as high-pressure water can damage them. Apply a degreaser to deal with any stubborn stains and scrub the surface with a stiff brush to ensure that degreaser does its work and loosens all the stains.

Prepare the pressure washer and ensure that it is set to the recommended pressure and has the right tip attached to the spray wand that is connected to the pressure washer. You also need an uninterrupted water supply. You can load the pressure washer with detergent so that the water coming out has its supply of cleaning liquid. Start the power washer and use it over a small area until you are familiar with all the controls and movements needed.

Start your pressure washing at the end of the sidewalk or driveway which is at the highest point. The water will then flow away and not accumulate. Point the sprayer wand at the surface that you are cleaning and sweep it back and forth until all area in front of you is covered. Move down the driveway, sweeping back and forth, and see that every stroke overlaps the one before by at least a couple of inches.

Once you have covered the entire surfaces of the driveway and sidewalks that need cleaning, allow the detergent to remain and dry up for at least half an hour. This will allow the detergent to do its work of loosening the dirt on the surfaces. It can help if this detergent is sprayed over the surface with a low-pressure setting, as it allows it to soak into the surface.

You now need to rinse the detergent from the surfaces you have applied the detergent to. Switch to a higher pressure wand tip and use the rinse setting on the washer. Go over the surfaces in the same way as before until you have covered it in entirety.

Now allow the driveway and sidewalk to dry off, and apply a sealant if necessary.
